What is Tempura?

Tempura's primary goal is to close the data gap by collecting sub-surface temperature data at a depth of 3 meters - a crucial piece of the puzzle in understanding climate change's impact on marine life!  With a Tempura in your hand, all you have to do is bring it along while you go fishing. When starting your trip,  simply unravel the temperature cable and lower it into the water with the buoy skipping at the surface. Turn on the power and the display will light on, wait a moment and soon you're catching data!

Technical Details

The main components Tempura are a Raspberry Pi, a GPS-module, a temperature sensor and a LCD display.  These are stored in a waterproof box along with the rest of the electronics. To get the temperature at the correct depth, a buoy (or simply a plastic bottle) is attached at the length of 3 meters on the temperature cable. Apart from collecting temperature data, Tempura also saves the date, time and position so that the end data user receives all relevant information (check out our dedicated page Data later). The display allows for live temperature readings even when there’s no service, handy when you're fishing far out on the ocean. Currently you transfer the data by emailing us, but next on our list is building the infrastructure to transfer the data automatically. The first prototype has a cost of approximately 1600 SEK, with potential to be lowered in the future. All components are accessible and DIY-friendly to encourage as many as possible to build and use it.

Don't worry, as long as you've used a computer before, which we can assume since you're here, you too can build this simple, yet impactful device! To guide you, we've crafted thorough instructions going over all parts from setting up the computer to submitting the data. If you're on the fence because you feel that you don't have the technology background needed,  have no fear. This can be a great learning experience as we guide you through the process. Remember, it's time to catch some data!

The future of Tempura

Tempura is not the only solution in helping fill the ocean data gap.  If you felt inspired, here are some of our ideas to develop it further.

  • The most important: Develop the infrastructure for automatic data handling

  • The most obvious : Make it smaller and cheaper!

  • The promising: Integrate it with an existing platform for recreational fishing. For example, integrating Tempura with an app for recreational fishing can bring value for both the app provider in more data and the Tempura user since the app increases the value of the user experience
